Claire woke up when the werewolf thug whoââ¬â¢d finished winding cords around her slapped her. Jez looked at that particular ââ¬Ëwolf carefully. She was too angry to glare at him. But she wanted to remember his face. Then she looked back at Claire, who was staring around her in bewilderment. ââ¬ËI-where are we? Whatââ¬â¢s going on, Jez?â⬠Hugh was also looking around, but with much less confusion. His gray eyes were simply sad and full of pain. ââ¬ËItââ¬â¢s all right, Claire,â⬠Jez said. ââ¬Å"Just keep quiet, okay? Weââ¬â¢re in a little trouble, but donââ¬â¢t tell them anything.â⬠She stared at her cousin, trying to will her to understand. ââ¬Å"A little trouble? I donââ¬â¢t think so,â⬠came a voice from the living room doorway. It was the same voice that had given the order about shooting kneecaps. A light, cold voice, like an Arctic wind. The speaker was a girl. A very pretty girl, Jez thought irrelevantly. She had black hair that fell straight down her back like silk, and eyes that gleamed like topaz. Porcelain skin. A cruel smile. Lots of Power that surrounded her like a dark aura. A vampire. She looked perhaps a year older than Jez, but that didnââ¬â¢t mean anything. She could be any age. And those eyes, Jez thought. Theyââ¬â¢re vaguely familiar. Like something Iââ¬â¢ve seen in a pictureâ⬠¦. ââ¬Å"I should probably introduce myself,â⬠the girl said, looking at her with cold mockery. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m Lily Redfern.â⬠Jez felt her stomach plummet. Hunter Redfernââ¬â¢s daughter. Well, that explained a lot. She was working for her father, of course. And she was a powerful enemy herself, over four hundred years old. There were rumors that last year sheââ¬â¢d been working the human slave trade, and making a lot of money at it. I should laugh, Jez thought. There I was telling Morgead that Hunter wanted to steal a march on the Council-and here he really did. Just not through me, of course. Heââ¬â¢s sent his only surviving child out to take care of us, to get Morgead to turn over the Wild Power. And thatââ¬â¢s why so many thugs-he can afford to buy as many as he needs. And the smooth operation-Lilyââ¬â¢s a born strategist. Not to mention absolutely merciless and cold as ice. She was right. Weââ¬â¢re not in a little trouble. Weââ¬â¢re in a whole lot. Somebody, Jez thought with a strange, quiet certainty, is going to die here. Lily was still talking. ââ¬Å"And now let me introduce my associates, whoââ¬â¢ve done so much to make this all possible.â⬠She gestured at someone hidden in the hall to come forward. ââ¬Å"This is Azarius. I think youââ¬â¢ve met.â⬠It was the vampire Jez had fought on the platform. He was tall, with dark skin and a look of authority. ââ¬Å"And this,â⬠Lily said, smiling, ââ¬Å"is someone youââ¬â¢ve also met.â⬠She gestured again, and a second figure appeared in the doorway. It was Pierce Holt. He was smiling faintly, his aristocratic face drawn in lines of genteel triumph. He waved one slender hand at them, his eyes as cold as Lilyââ¬â¢s. Morgead gave an inarticulate roar and tried to lunge at him. He only succeeded in falling on the floor, a struggling body in a cocoon of bast. Lily and Azarius both laughed. Pierce just looked scornful. ââ¬Å"You really didnââ¬â¢t guess?â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re so stupid, Morgead. Coming out this morning to meet me, so trusting, so naive-I thought you were smarter. Lily had been watching in amusement, but now she waved one hand. ââ¬Å"Okay, enough fun and games. Down to business.â⬠Two of the thugs sat Morgead back up, and Lily walked to the middle of the room. She looked at each of them in turn, Jez last. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve only got one question for you,â⬠she said in her cool, quiet voice. ââ¬Å"Which human is the Wild Power?â⬠Jez stared at her. She doesnââ¬â¢t know. She knows almost everything else, but not that. And if she canââ¬â¢t find outâ⬠¦ Jez gave Hugh and Claire one long, intense look, telling them to keep silent. Then she looked back at Lily. ââ¬Å"I have no idea what youââ¬â¢re talking about.â⬠Lily hit her. It was a pretty good blow, but nothing to compare with what Jez got when she was in a fight. Jez laughed, a natural laugh of surprise and scorn. Lilyââ¬â¢s hawklike golden eyes went icy. ââ¬Å"You think this is funny?â⬠she said, still quietly. ââ¬Å"My father sent me to get the Wild Power, and thatââ¬â¢s just what Iââ¬â¢m going to do. Even if it means tearing you and your vampire boyfriend to pieces, mutant.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, well, suppose I donââ¬â¢t know? Did you ever think of that? He was tied up, but he was sitting with his head thrown back like a prince. Something tore inside Jez. She didnââ¬â¢t understand why he would do it. He must know he wasnââ¬â¢t saving her. The only people he might possibly save were Hugh and Claire. And why would he care about them? Besides, it was a futile gesture. Probably the most gallant thing Jez had ever seen. She stared at him, feeling the wetness spill from her eyes again, wishing she were telepathic and could ask him why in the worlds he had done it. Then his green eyes turned to her, and she heard his mental voice. Thereââ¬â¢s just a chance theyââ¬â¢ll let one of them go with a beating. Just maybe-as a warning to Circle Daybreak not to mess with Hunter anymore. Especially if I convince Lily Iââ¬â¢ll work with her. Itââ¬â¢s only when the danger is greatest, when thereââ¬â¢s no physical way to escape, that the power comes out.â⬠Lily cast a sideways look at Hugh and Claire, who were sitting tensely, their eyes wide. ââ¬Å"You mean they may not know which it is?â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe not. Maybe itââ¬â¢s completely automatic at this point. But thereââ¬â¢s one way to find out. They all seem-attached-to the halfbreed. Put her life in danger, and then see which of them can break free and try to save her.â⬠Lilyââ¬â¢s perfect lips slowly curved in a smile. ââ¬Å"I knew there was a reason I liked you,â⬠she said. Then she gestured at the thugs. ââ¬Å"Go on, do itâ⬠Everything was confused for a bit. Not because Jez was struggling. She wasnââ¬â¢t. But Claire was screaming and Hugh and Morgead were shouting, and Lily was laughing. When the worst of the noise died down, Jez found herself on her back. Azarius was standing over her, and he was holding a hammer and stake. ââ¬Å"Isnââ¬â¢t it interesting,â⬠Lily was saying, ââ¬Å"that a stake through the heart is the one thing that takes care of humans and vampires equally efficiently?â⬠ââ¬Å"And halfbreeds, too,â⬠Pierce said. They were on either side of Azarius, looking down and laughing. ââ¬Å"Lily, listen. Listen,â⬠Morgead said, his voice hoarse and desperate. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t have to do this. Suddenly Jez felt strangely uncertain. Her heart was beating very quickly, and her mind was racing even faster. Fragments of thought were glittering through her consciousness, like bits of melody almost too faint to catch. It was as if all the prophecies sheââ¬â¢d heard about the Wild Powers were echoing, ricocheting around her brain at insane speed. And there was something about them, something that was bothering her. Something that made her wonderâ⬠¦ Could it be that Claire wasnââ¬â¢t the Wild Power? Jez had assumed she was-but was it possible that sheââ¬â¢d been wrong? Hugh had been on the platform, too, watching the train approach. Hugh had reason to be upset at having to watch Jez die. He cared about her. Jez knew that now. And Hugh was seventeen. However, a schoolââ¬â¢s charter is reviewed intermittently (typically every three to five years) and can be annulled if guidelines on curriculum and management are not followed or if the standards are not met (U. The Knowledge is Power Program was inaugurated in 1994 with the ideology to create a classroom that helps students develop abilities that would be necessary to succeed in college and their career. Before a student can start at KIPP all three parties (The student, teacher, and parent) must sign a learning pledge called the Commitment to Excellence, which ensures that each will do whatever it takes to help the student learn. An agreement segment of the student conduct states that he/she will always work, think, and behave in the best way they know how, and will do whatever it takes for the student and their fellow students to learn. The obligations of the parent include making sure the students homework is complete every night, to have communication with the teachers if there is a problem with the student and to read with their child. This commitment makes the parents more attentive when it comes to the education their child is receiving and any modifications they wish to peruse at the charter. The KIPP schools are successful in my opinion due to their ââ¬ËFive Pillars of Successââ¬â¢ educational structure, which was the operational principle in which the school was based on. These five pillars include: High Expectations, Choice amp; Commitment, More Time, Power to Lead, and Focus on Results. The first pillar, ââ¬ËHigh Expectationsââ¬â¢ is one of their philosophies which ââ¬Å"concentrate on clear and assessable high expectations for academic achievement and behavior that make no excuses based on the students backgrounds. â⬠(KIPP website) Parentââ¬â¢s students, teachers, and staff generate and strengthen a culture of achievement and support through a range of formal and informal rewards and consequences for academic performance and behavior. The first pillar enables the students to reach a higher level of assertiveness throughout their time at KIPP both in and out of the classroom. The succeeding pillar, ââ¬ËChoice amp; Commitmentââ¬â¢, expresses the obligation of every student, teacher and parent to contribute to the KIPP community. There is no required pre-requisites to join however, everyone must make and uphold a commitment to the school and to each other to put in the time and effort required to achieve success. This way of learning and participation creates a student who attains the knowledge of time management and work ethic. The next pillar, ââ¬ËMore Timeââ¬â¢ is a clear precise statement regarding the time spent in the classroom. KIPP has elongated school days, weeks, and years, where students will have have more time in the classroom. The more time that is spent educating the students, the greater advantage they have to acquire the academic knowledge and skills that will prepare them for competitive high schools and colleges. This also allows them to engage in extracurricular activities that could spark a diverse interest in various fields. The following pillar,ââ¬â¢ Power to Leadââ¬â¢ is aimed towards the principals rather than the students at KIPP. The principals of KIPP schools are effective academic and organizational leaders who understand that great schools require great school leaders. They have control over their school budget and personnel. They are also free to analyze their finances or make staffing substitutions, allowing them full efficiency in helping students learn. This pillar puts the school and its success in the hands of the principal and government funding rather than the state getting involved with regulations and financial policies. The final pillar, ââ¬ËFocus on Resultsââ¬â¢ relentlessly concentrates on high student performance on standardized tests and other objective processes. There is zero-tolerance on failing. ââ¬Å"I will always work, think, and behave in the best way I know how, and I will do whatever it takes for me and my fellow students to learn. This also means that I will complete all my homework every night, I will call my teachers if I have a problem with the homework or a problem with coming to school, and I will raise my hand and ask questions in class if I do not understand something. Students are expected to achieve success in all of their studies that will assist them when the time comes to move on to college and their respected careers. Statistics have shown that the KIPP schools, specifically in Washington DC have out preformed when it comes to student achievement, when compared to public schools. In 2001, a team of dedicated educators established KIPP DCââ¬â¢s first school, in a church basement in Anacostia. The school started out with 80 fifth graders and has grown to one of the largest accomplishing middle schools in the district. Due to Susan Schaeffler (Founder of KIPP DC) success with her first school, KIPP DC braches out to over 3,000 students at ten schools on three campuses in D. C. ââ¬â¢s Marshall Heights, Anacostia, and Shaw neighborhoods. KIPP schools in Washington D. C and across the country have been a prime example of the success in under development communities and have given under-privileged students the tools they need. One of the primary advocates of this program is Pedro Noguera, a professor of sociology at New York University, is theà author of ââ¬Å"City Schools and the American Dreamâ⬠. Pedro states that ââ¬Å"theres no doubt to me that charter schools are being used to undermine public education in many communities, but its also clear that public schools in many communities are in need of change and renewal. The biggest threat to public education doesnt come from charter schools; it comes from the loss of confidence and support from parentsâ⬠(Charter Schools Role in Stren gthening Public Education, Pedro Noguera) I agree whole-heartily with his statement. The main problem with our public education failing is that the parents do not give enough effort in supporting their child through the education process. This problem is even greater in an urban setting, where crime and poverty are on the rise; in these urban areas, families have less human capital then those who live in a weather neighborhood and struggle to survive in todayââ¬â¢s economy. In summary, the effects of poverty on children matter in regards to student achievement. Without these charter schools, children in urban areas would stand less of a chance to have higher levels of educational accomplishment, in high school and college. We need every child of America, no matter what setting they were raised in, to attain the knowledge and work ethic that will make them successful in their career for years to come. Demographics do not define the success of a child, and every day KIPP is proving that by breaking the standards of inner city statistics. In my opinion KIPP is one of the better alternatives to the public schools. They provided a passionate approach to furthering the needs of the students, and direct them on a pathway to education success.
